Berry Compote Recipe
This 4-ingredient berry compote recipe comes together in one saucepan in about 15 minutes. Glossy, jammy, sweet berries perfect for spooning over ice cream or waffles.

It feels fancy, but it’s so easy.
- Adding this homemade berry compote to vanilla ice cream, fluffy waffles, or pound cake feels so extra, but you won’t believe how easily it comes together.
- We’re talking one pot and 4 ingredients. It’s the perfect way to showcase the best of those summer berries in the fridge before they go bad!
Here’s what you’ll need.

Here’s how it all comes together.
COMBINE EVERYTHING. Add the berries, sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest to a medium saucepan.

SIMMER. Cook over medium to medium-low heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened and jammy. It’ll keep thickening as it cools.

COOL + ENJOY. Let it cool for about 10 minutes, then spoon over vanilla ice cream or waffles and dig in.

Things I learned while testing this recipe.
- Frozen berries work just as well as fresh here (honestly, they release more juice, so the compote gets extra glossy). No need to thaw them first, just toss them in straight from the freezer.
- Don’t rush the simmer. It looks thin and syrupy at first, but it thickens up fast in the last few minutes, and even more once it’s off the heat, so pull it before it looks “done.”
- If you prefer a super thick compote, add a cornstarch slurry. Dissolve 1 teaspoon cornstarch in 1–2 teaspoons cold water and stir it in during the last couple of minutes of cooking.
- You don’t necessarily need to use multiple types of berries for this recipe. You can use all strawberries or all blueberries, and it will be just as delicious. Raspberry compote is one of our family’s favorites! Just make sure it’s 2 cups of whatever fruit you want.
The perfect make-ahead recipe.
- This compote actually gets better after a day in the fridge.
- The flavors settle, and it thickens up even more.
- This is one of those rare recipes where making it ahead is better than serving it fresh.

Here’s what I’d serve with this.
- air fryer French toast
- vanilla ice cream
- oatmeal
- fluffy pancakes
- crispy waffles
- yogurt parfait
- buttered English muffin
- New York cheesecake
- angel food cake or pound cake
Just in case you have leftovers.
- STORING: Let the compote cool completely, then store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
- FREEZING: Freeze in an airtight, freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.
- REHEATING: Warm gently in a small saucepan over low heat, or microwave in 15-second bursts, stirring in between, until it’s loosened back up.
