Ingredients and Substitutions
- White Cake Mix – A 15.25 oz. box is the perfect size, but anything close will work for this recipe. You could also use a Funfetti cake mix (which will come with some sprinkles mixed in, but you’ll want to add more).
- Cream Cheese – It’s important that the cream cheese is totally at room temperature so that the dip will be smooth and creamy. An hour or two on the counter should soften the cream cheese enough. Some recipes use vanilla Greek yogurt (or regular vanilla yogurt) as the mix-in for this cake batter dip, but I prefer the rich, creaminess of the cream cheese instead!
- Whipped Topping – Also known as Cool Whip, is the key ingredient in this Dunkaroo dip. You can use an off-brand cool whip as well, but just remember this is different than whipped cream. Whipped cream will not work well in this recipe.
- Sprinkles – Use your favorite sprinkles for this recipe. I like these rainbow non-peril sprinkles, but any sprinkle will work! Please see the notes below regarding color running from the sprinkles as well.
- Heavy Cream – You can also use 2% or whole milk in place of the heavy cream in this recipe. This liquid in this recipe is just going to loosen up the other ingredients to make it perfectly dip-able!
Instructions
Add cake mix, cream cheese, and whipped topping to a large mixing bowl.
Mix with an electric mixture until well combined. Add heavy cream as needed to thin the dip. Then add sprinkles.
Gently fold the sprinkles in, reserving some for garnish.
Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with remaining sprinkles. Serve with graham crackers and vanilla wafers and enjoy!
Make-Ahead Instructions
This Dunkaroo dip is a delicious make-ahead dessert that’s perfect for birthday parties, backyard barbecues, or Saturday night movies!
- This dip can be made up to a week in advance and stored in the fridge in an airtight container, however, I recommend waiting to fold in the sprinkles until just before serving.
- Depending on what type of sprinkle you use, the color from the sprinkles may run, making the dip tie-dyed rather than white with sprinkles. Quickly folding the sprinkles in and not overmixing will remedy this for the most part.
- After this dip is prepared in advance and chilled, it will thicken and you may need to stir in a splash of milk or heavy cream to loosen it up a bit and make it more dip-able. That’s why it’s also important to wait to add the sprinkles until just before serving.

Baking Flour in the Oven
- Raw flour can potentially be harmful if it contains bacteria, so baking the dry cake mix for a few minutes is a great way to combat this.
- Spread cake mix on a large baking sheet in an even layer. Bake at 350 degrees for 5 minutes. Then let cool for a couple minutes.
- Some recipes don’t include this step, but it takes just a few minutes and it’s not much of a hassle, so I’d rather be safe than sorry!
- You can also microwave the cake mix in a microwave-safe bowl, heating it in 30-second increments for a few minutes or until it reaches 165 degrees.
Tips
- This dip will have the best texture if mixed using an electric mixer/hand mixer or a stand mixer. You can try to mix by hand as well but the cream cheese will have to be very soft and it will take a bit of elbow grease to accomplish the same smooth, creamy texture.
- As mentioned above, after adding the sprinkles the color may run and cause the dip to become colored instead of staying white. To remedy these you can try a few different sprinkle brands or you can just add the sprinkles to the top instead of folding them in.
- If you prefer to fold the sprinkles in, wait until everything is well mixed, and then fold the sprinkles in JUST until combined. This will minimize the amount of color that runs and keep your dip looking fresh and white!
Variations
- You can use any color of sprinkle for this dip. Rainbow sprinkles are fun, but keep in mind that you can customize the dip with any color sprinkle so if you’re making this Dunkaroo dip for a birthday party or baby shower, try finding sprinkles that match the color scheme or decor!
- You could also mix in things other than sprinkles if you’d like! Crushed Oreos, mini chocolate chips, or even peanut butter will transform this recipe into a whole nother dessert!
FAQ
This Dunkaroo dip comes together in just 5 minutes with only 5 ingredients – cake mix, cream cheese, Cool Whip, sprinkles, and heavy cream! Mix, serve, and enjoy! It really doesn’t get any easier than this!
Yes! Dunkaroo dip can be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Allow it to thaw overnight in the fridge and then serve! Keep in mind you may need to stir in a bit of milk or cream to loosen it up! If you’ll be freezing it, I recommend waiting to add the sprinkles until just before serving so they don’t turn the dip tie-dye colors.
