Easy Avocado Lime Ranch Dressing Recipe
This avocado lime ranch dressing combines the classic herbaceous flavors of ranch dressing with the creamy texture of avocado and a tangy hint of lime and cilantro. It pairs perfectly with a simple green salad, works well as a dipping sauce for your favorite baked fries, or is the perfect drizzle for your crispy cheese quesadilla!
Ingredients for the Best Avocado Ranch Dressing
- Avocado: Ripe avocados work best for this recipe. You can also substitute with Wholly Avocado which is just mashed avocado.
- Sour Cream: Use a full-fat sour cream for the best flavor and texture. You can also substitute with whole milk plain Greek yogurt.
- Mayonnaise: Mayo adds fat and fat equals flavor! This recipe doesn’t have a ton so the dressing won’t taste like mayonnaise, trust me. The fat from the mayo and olive oil and going to add a delicious richness to the dressing. Use full-fat for the best flavor and texture.
- Olive Oil: Use whatever olive oil you like. Substitute with avocado oil or grapeseed oil.
- Lime Zest and Juice: Lime zest and fresh lime juice work together to add a delicious tang and the perfect amount of lime flavor.
- Dried Dill: I prefer dried dill because the flavor is more concentrated, but you could also substitute it with fresh dill. Just keep in mind you’ll need about twice as much to get the same amount of flavor.
- Garlic Powder: I prefer using garlic powder as opposed to fresh garlic because it has a milder flavor. Raw garlic would be too overpowering in this avocado dressing recipe.
- Onion Powder: Onion powder works in combination with the dried dill and garlic powder to create that signature ranch dressing seasoning.
- Whole Milk: Whole milk loosens up the dressing and makes it a little thinner. Add as much or as little as you like until the dressing reaches your desired consistency.

How to Make Without a Food Processor
- If you don’t have a food processor in your kitchen, you can still make this creamy avocado dressing recipe!
- You could use a nutribullet, blender, or immersion blender instead of the food processor.
- You can also mash the avocados down to a smooth paste, then add the remaining ingredients and whisk together until just combined.
How to Pick the Best Avocados
- A ripe avocado is generally a darker shade of green. Start there and then do a little more investigating.
- Gently squeeze the avocado to feel the texture. A ripe avocado will have a bit of give to it and feel slightly soft. If it feels hard, it’s not ripe yet. And if it feels mushy, it’s overripe.
- Next, remove the stem or belly button. If it’s green underneath it’s probably ripe. If it doesn’t come off it’s not ripe yet. And if it’s brown underneath, it’s too ripe.
- Avoid avocados with visible scarring or soft spots (bruises).
- If you can’t find any avocados that are ripe, place unripened avocados in a brown paper bag with a ripe banana, roll down the top of the bag and let them ripen for a couple days on the counter.
Tips for Making the Best Avocado Ranch Dressing
- Ripe avocados are ideal. Nothing ruins this dressing quicker than underripe avocados. So follow my tips above if you’ve got some avocados that need a little more time to ripen.
- Overripe avocados will also work. If you’ve got some avocados that are slightly past their prime – maybe they’ve got some brown spots and are a little mushy – this dressing is the perfect way to use them up! Underripe avocados will not work well for this dressing, but slightly overripe ones are great!
- Don’t be afraid to season. This recipe is made with very simple ingredients and while they are a flavorful combination, salt and pepper are going to go a long way in boosting the overall flavors of the dressing. Add salt and pepper to taste, combine the ingredients, and then taste again. If the flavor is a little flat, add another pinch or two of salt until everything sings.
- Serve with my favorite house salad! This dressing is destined to be paired with my favorite green salad recipe – cucumbers, carrots, avocado, shredded cheese, and homemade croutons are the perfect base to drizzle this avocado dressing over!
