You Will Love This
- Everything you love about hot dogs, but easier and better! Honestly, hot dogs are already pretty easy to make, but they don’t always taste great – especially if you’re just boiling them on the stove. Cooking them in the air fryer frees up time for you to do other things and allows them to cook up super juicy on the inside with a delicious crust on the outside. You’ll be blown away by how flavorful these air fryer hot dogs are!

Ingredients and Substitutions
- Hot Dogs – There are so many varieties of hot dogs and sausages that you can use for this recipe. At my house, our favorites are all beef hot dogs or beef franks like Nathan’s, Ballpark, or Hebrew National, but you can use turkey dogs, chicken sausages, or any other type of hot dog for this recipe.
- Hot Dog Buns – Use your favorite hot dog buns for this recipe. We love brioche buns or whole wheat brat buns. The best part about this recipe is that you add the buns right at the end and cook them for a couple minutes so they’re warmed through and a little crisp on the outside.
- All the Fixin’s – Here’s where the fun starts! Dress up your air fryer hot dog however you like with ketchup, mustard, relish, cheese, chili, onions, pickles, bacon, sauerkraut, BBQ sauce, and any other favorite toppings or condiments.
Instructions
Slice a few diagonal cuts into each hot dog. Place hot dogs in the air fryer basket or tray.
Cook for 4-8 minutes.
Place cooked hot dogs inside buns and place them back in the air fryer for another 1-2 minutes to crisp up the buns with the hot dogs inside.
Top as desired and enjoy!
Tips
- Don’t skip the diagonal cuts on the hot dog. This helps ensure that the hot dogs cook evenly all the way through and it also gives them some faux “grill marks” which is fun.
- Air fry the buns, too. This is such an underrated step when it comes to hot dogs. I always recommend placing the bun in the air fryer as well to warm it through and crisp it up. It really takes these hot dogs to the next level.
- No cooking oil is required. You don’t have to spray the hot dogs with cooking oil or add anything to the air fryer tray; they won’t stick!
FAQ
At 400 degrees, hot dogs typically take between 4-8 minutes to air fry. This will depend on what brand of air fryer you have and how well done you like your hot dog. We use the Instant Vortex and found that right around 6 minutes is the sweet spot.
Yes, and you should! Air frying hot dogs is hands down the easiest way to cook them and gives you the most flavor! Just make sure you cut slits in the tops of them before putting them in the air fryer.

I can honestly say these were the best hotdogs I have ever eaten. They were delicious! I will never use my outdoor grill for grilling hotdogs again.
Right? I totally agree! The air fryer does something magical with those hot dogs!! So glad you enjoyed them, Carolyn 🙂
I just bought an air fryer, I have the vortex plus 6 qt. How do you do more than one dish? For instance if I make the hot dogs in the air fryer, I can’t figure out how I could do tater tots in the air fryer, the hot dogs would be cold by the time the tater tots were done. I know some air fryers have two baskets, but that’s not what I got, am I just out of luck?
I have the same one – the Instant Vortex – and love it! One of my favorite things about it is that instead of having just one basket as most air fryers do, it has three trays! I’d recommend adding the hot dogs on one tray and the tater tots to another. If they have different cooking temps, just try something in the middle. I imagine the tater tots will take a bit longer than the hot dogs, so I’d start those a few minutes ahead. Then they should finish cooking right around the same time and all in one machine! Hope that helps 🙂
Hmm, mine only has one tray. Maybe mine is smaller than yours? Not sure. https://www.instanthome.com/product/instant-appliances/vortex-plus/6-quart-clearcook-air-fryer
Ohhhh yes I have the Instant Vortex PLUS! It looks like mine is a 10 quart so a bit larger than yours. So sorry! Here’s the link for the one that I have: https://amzn.to/3GTYKJV
OMG tasty. You just converted hubbies and me. 5 minutes in the Ninja Foodie and 1 minte for the bun at 400. We did two dogs and they were perfect!
Woohoo! I could not agree more – it’s the easiest way to cook a hot dog! Thanks for leaving a review – I really appreciate it 🙂
Hot dogs came out great
Kylie, I’m considering buying an air fryer and need some info.
I see the Vortex comes with two trays. Can both be used at the same time?
Yes! That’s what I love about it! You can cook quite a bit of food at one time since there are two trays. It’s nice too because it has a lot of other functions besides air fryer as well.
